Why Are Adults Looking for Islamic Classes?

The desire to learn about Islam does not end when a person finishes school. Many adults continue to seek opportunities to strengthen their understanding of their faith and develop a stronger foundation in Islamic knowledge.

Some may want to return to Islamic learning after many years of working. Others may wish to study the Quran more deeply, understand Hadith and Sunnah, strengthen their knowledge of Fiqh and Aqidah, learn Arabic, or explore Islam through a more structured programme.

For working adults in particular, part-time Islamic studies can provide a practical way to pursue religious education while continuing with work and family responsibilities.

MUIS has also highlighted the strong demand for Islamic learning among Singapore Muslims across different stages of life, reflecting the continuing importance of Islamic education for adults as well as younger learners. (muis.gov.sg)

What Types of Islamic Programmes Are Available for Adults?

Adult Islamic education can take many forms, depending on a learner's existing knowledge, interests and goals.

Some learners may be looking for basic Islamic classes for adults, while others may want to pursue a more comprehensive course of study leading to a certificate or diploma.

Common areas of Islamic learning include:

• Islamic Studies

• Quranic Studies

• Al-Quran and Al-Sunnah

• Hadith

• Fiqh

• Aqidah

• Arabic

• Islamic history and civilisation

• Islamic Psychology and Counselling

• Islamic worldview and thought

For adults who want to pursue Islamic education over a longer period, programmes with a structured progression from certificate to diploma and higher-level studies can provide a clearer pathway for continued learning.

Part-Time Islamic Studies in Singapore

One of the most important considerations for adult learners is time.

Many adults work full-time, have young families or have other responsibilities that make full-time study difficult. Part-time Islamic studies in Singapore therefore provide an alternative for those who want to continue learning while maintaining their existing commitments.

Al-Zuhri offers flexible part-time programmes from certificate level through to master's level. The institute describes these programmes as suitable for learners who want to pursue Islamic education without putting aside their work and family commitments. Selected programmes are available through physical and online learning, with options in Malay and English. (zuhri.com.sg)

Islamic Studies

For adults seeking a broad foundation in Islamic knowledge, an Islamic Studies programme can provide a structured introduction to different areas of the Islamic tradition.

Rather than studying individual subjects independently, students can follow a progressive curriculum covering different disciplines of Islamic knowledge.

Quran and Sunnah Studies

For learners particularly interested in the Quran and Hadith, Al-Zuhri offers the Diploma in Quran and Sunnah Studies (DPQS) on a part-time basis.

The four-year programme covers core disciplines related to the Quran and Sunnah, including Quranic sciences, Tafsir, Qira'at, Ulum al-Hadith, Arabic and research methodology. (zuhri.com.sg)

This makes it an option for adults looking for more in-depth Quran and Hadith studies in Singapore, rather than short introductory Quran classes.

Online Islamic Classes for Adults

For some adult learners, attending classes at a physical location every week may not be practical.

Online Islamic classes provide greater flexibility for people who work irregular hours, live further from an education centre or have family commitments.

Al-Zuhri offers selected certificate and diploma programmes online, giving learners another option for pursuing structured Islamic education while managing their existing responsibilities. (zuhri.com.sg)

Online learning can be particularly useful for adults who are looking for Islamic studies online, while still wanting to follow a structured programme rather than relying solely on individual lectures or short courses.

How to Choose an Islamic Programme for Adults

Before enrolling in an adult Islamic education programme, it can be helpful to consider several factors.

1. What is your current level of Islamic knowledge?

Someone beginning their formal Islamic learning journey may prefer a certificate or introductory programme. Learners with an existing foundation may wish to progress directly towards diploma-level or more advanced studies, depending on the programme requirements.

2. What would you like to study?

Consider whether your main interest is general Islamic Studies, Quran and Sunnah, Arabic, Islamic Psychology and Counselling, or another area of Islamic knowledge.

3. How much time can you commit?

Working adults may find part-time Islamic classes more suitable than full-time study.

4. Do you prefer physical or online classes?

Consider your location, work schedule and family commitments when deciding between physical and online learning.

5. Do you want a long-term learning pathway?

If your goal is to continue studying for several years, look for an institution that offers progression from certificate to diploma and higher levels.
